How to Join Medicare
Contact Social Security up to 3 months before your 65th birthday.
Confirm you are eligible for both Medicare Part A (Hospital Coverage) and Part B (Medical Coverage).
Ask Social Security for written evidence of your Medicare eligibility and effective date (it may take 4 to 6 weeks for your Medicare card to arrive).
Note: Your Medicare benefits generally start the 1st of the month in which you turn age 65 (your Social Security monthly benefits may start on a different date). You may incur penalties if you do not take Medicare Parts B and D when first eligible.
Select how you would like to receive your Medicare benefits (Original Medicare versus a Medicare Advantage plan, like MediGold)
Complete an enrollment application if you choose to join a Medicare Advantage plan, like MediGold. You may enroll in MediGold online, over the phone or by mail, up to 3 months prior to the month in which you turn 65 (for coverage to begin on the 1st of the month in which you are eligible for Medicare). You may also apply up to 3 months after the month in which you turn 65.
